2011 Rugby World Cup

Situation

After the hugely successful opening ceremony in downtown Auckland, Cityguard was brought in to assist with securing an enlarged event foot print, which included the Viaduct Harbour, Princes Wharf Restaurant precinct and The Wynyard Quarter.

Services Utilised

  • A 15 man Rapid Deployment team was activated, primarily to respond to and support the Security Officers deployed to managing assets around key Marina areas, as well as to support the many Security Officers managing the doors to bars and restaurants as the crowds built up on key game nights
  • A 45 man team was mobilised to support a new ‘Fan Zone’ within the Wynyard Quarter, a licensed area with large screen live game coverage, the finals night drew a 10,000 capacity crowd to the Wynyard Quarter
  • A 10 man team was activated to support a campervan car park on Z Pier Westhaven Drive, 24/7
  • A 15 man team was activated to support and reinforce key asset protection around Marina and client premises

Outcome

We won! After the success of the opening ceremony, where approximately 200,000 New Zealand and international rugby fans converged to celebrate and be part of the Opening Ceremony, many questions were asked and as a consequence extraordinary requests were placed on companies such as Cityguard, to hire, uniform, train and deploy security staff in seemingly impossible timeframes.

It was a remarkable effort to achieve what we did; we were always fully prepared and staffed and presented immaculate Security teams who performed at optimum levels at all times and as a consequence were offered high praise from the Ministry of Economic Development, Auckland Council and our highly valued clients. A very successful operation managed by Cityguard.
